Implementing Open-Access Therapy in the Province of New Brunswick

Abstract
This chapter describes the change process, experience, and outcomes of implementing One-at-a-Time (OAAT) or single-session therapy (SST) services in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. In this system-wide initiative, addiction and mental health teams across different regions were asked to collaborate on the critical need to reduce barriers and wait times for individuals seeking help. Through careful planning including provincial working groups, a phased training program, and sustainability and reinforcement strategies, open-access One-at-a-Time therapy services were adopted across the board as an integral part of the province’s care system. Department of Health initiative lead Bernard Goguen and change management specialist Katie Burke co-author this chapter to share the story of this part of the system transformation toward a stepped care model in New Brunswick, with promising results and important lessons learned along the way.
