A Democracy (Never) to Come: Fugitivity and Metaphysics in Afropessimism

Abstract
ABSTRACT This article problematizes Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction of democracy through a reading of a myriad number of thinkers loosely affiliated with Afropessimism. By identifying the latent aporia at the heart of democracy, Derrida attempts to demonstrate the “ultra-transcendental” condition of possibility for democracy: that an undemocratic consequence can be achieved by democratically elected means. Tying together this Derridean aporia and Wilderson’s “meta-aporia,” to show how anti-Blackness is this “ultra-transcendental” condition for democracy in the West. In this manner, the article makes an intervention on the “strategy” of deconstruction to read Afropessimism’s unique “engagement” with Derrida’s corpus. Ultimately, this article concludes with the possibility of a future free from this democratic aporia by foregrounding the necessity of overcoming democracy as the remnant of anti-Black political organization and suggest a more radical overcoming is needed and essential to a Black liberatory politics.
