Abstract
Krig, korstog og kulturmøder Denne bog handler om krig, korstog og kulturmøder i 1700-tallet. Dette lange århundrede karakteriseres ofte som oplysningens århundrede i Europa. Fremtrædende tænkere stillede sig kritiske overfor religionens (primært kristendommens) hidtidige rolle som den primære ramme for tolke og forstå verden – ikke mindst når det galt mødet med ikke-vestlige kulturer. Det var imidlertid ikke en holdning som stod uantastet i samtiden. Andre centrale aktører tog netop udgangspunkt i en udpræget religiøs forståelsesramme for legitimere og forklare kulturmøder og de deraf følgende krige. I denne periode, hvor europæiske magter intensiverede deres bestræbelser på at vinde nye kolonier overalt på kloden, der førte til en næsten uendelig række af nye krige og kulturmøder, blev nogle af de gamle forestillinger fra middelalderens korstog således genoplivet og revitaliseret i mødet med nye folkeslag og gammelkendte fjender. Nærværende bog præsenterer nogle af disse eksempler og peger samtidig på den relevans, der ligger i disse tanker og forestillinger i en konfliktplaget nutid.
