‘Doing things as a family had never been this complicated’: women’s experiences with facilitating and engaging in family leisure during the vaccine mandate period

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic intensified the care demands placed on women related to work and family roles. Vaccine mandates introduced a unique restriction in accessing some family leisure spaces (e.g. restaurants and movie theatres). The study sought to capture the experiences of women with and without children while facilitating and participating in family leisure during the vaccine mandate period. Phenomenology guided the study. Semi-structured interviews utilizing a photo elicitation technique were conducted with 13 women in New Brunswick, Canada. The findings revealed that facilitating family leisure was complicated by the women’s need and desire to accommodate unvaccinated family members, their vigilance in assessing the risk and monitoring the safety of vulnerable family members, and the need to manage emotions and behaviours when vigilance waned. Findings suggest that during times of uncertainty or when family safety is at risk, the adjustments to family leisure that are needed in response can influence women’s mental load.
