Abstract
Democracy as an operating framework is in a liminal state given that its present configuration cannot satisfactorily address the existential threats that confront it. A liminal state occurs when the social system increases in complexity through time until it reaches a state of chaos, and it becomes clear that the present orthodoxy is not capable of addressing the major issues that confront it. Given this liminal state, leisure science has an opportunity to help transition democracy to a new social paradigm. In order to accomplish this major task, leisure science and professional practice will need to reconstruct its own raison d’être and play a much greater role in conceptualizing and configuring society than it has in the past.
