Cette entrée se focalise sur l'anthropologie sociale et culturelle liée aux sociétés indigènes afin d'examiner les tentatives de définition d'un style national au sein de la discipline. L'anthropologie s'est consolidée en tant que discipline académique dans les universités au milieu du vingtième siècle. Initialement, le culturalisme américain a dominé, bien que critiqué, et de façon tardive, dans les années 1960, les abords se sont focalisés sur les relations interethniques dans le contexte national. Au sein de la génération suivante se sont formées deux tendances, une anthropologie historique et une ethnologie américaniste. Dans les années plus récentes, l'arrivée des indigènes au sein même de l'anthropologie amené des transformations prometteuses de nouvelles directions théoriques.
