Abstract
We measure the spin-density matrix elements (SDMEs) for the photoproduction of <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <a:mrow> <a:mi>ϕ</a:mi> <a:mo>(</a:mo> <a:mn>1020</a:mn> <a:mo>)</a:mo> </a:mrow> </a:math> off of the proton in its decay to <b:math xmlns:b="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <b:mrow> <b:msubsup> <b:mi>K</b:mi> <b:mi>S</b:mi> <b:mn>0</b:mn> </b:msubsup> <b:msubsup> <b:mi>K</b:mi> <b:mi>L</b:mi> <b:mn>0</b:mn> </b:msubsup> </b:mrow> </b:math> , using 105 <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <c:msup> <c:mrow> <c:mi>pb</c:mi> </c:mrow> <c:mrow> <c:mo>−</c:mo> <c:mn>1</c:mn> </c:mrow> </c:msup> </c:math> of data collected with a linearly polarized photon beam using the GlueX experiment. The SDMEs are measured in nine bins of the squared four-momentum transfer <d:math xmlns:d="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <d:mi>t</d:mi> </d:math> in the range <e:math xmlns:e="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <e:mrow> <e:mo>−</e:mo> <e:mi>t</e:mi> <e:mo>=</e:mo> <e:mn>0.15</e:mn> <e:mo>−</e:mo> <e:mn>1.0</e:mn> </e:mrow> </e:math> <f:math xmlns:f="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <f:msup> <f:mrow> <f:mi>GeV</f:mi> </f:mrow> <f:mn>2</f:mn> </f:msup> </f:math> , providing the first measurement of their <g:math xmlns:g="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <g:mi>t</g:mi> </g:math> dependence for photon beam energies of <h:math xmlns:h="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <h:mrow> <h:msub> <h:mi>E</h:mi> <h:mi>γ</h:mi> </h:msub> <h:mo>=</h:mo> <h:mn>8.2</h:mn> <h:mo>−</h:mo> <h:mn>8.8</h:mn> </h:mrow> </h:math> GeV. We confirm the dominance of Pomeron exchange in this region and put constraints on the contribution of other Regge exchanges. We also find that helicity amplitudes where the helicity of the photon and <i:math xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <i:mrow> <i:mi>ϕ</i:mi> <i:mo>(</i:mo> <i:mn>1020</i:mn> <i:mo>)</i:mo> </i:mrow> </i:math> differ by two units are negligible.
