Photovoltaic Solar-Induced Joule Heat On-/Off-Line Recovering Active Carbon-Coated Carbon Fiber Electrode (AC@JHCF) and Its Supercapacitor Performance

Abstract
Commercial carbon fiber has good conductivity and uniformity, which can be directly used as an electrode due to its micrometer-sized diameter. In our work, commercial carbon fiber is recovered from waste CFRP based on the Joule heat of the conductive carbon fiber, and the electric energy consumption is covered by photovoltaic (PV) solar cells. The photovoltaic solar-assisted recovery of CF can be carried out on-line on a sunny day and also off-line on a rainy day. Upon application of Joule heat at 6 A for 10 min, epoxy resin is partially removed, and the remaining epoxy resin is converted into carbon and coated on the carbon fiber, i.e., C@JHCF-6–10 composite. After activation, the resulting AC@JHCF-6–10 has a high specific surface area of 743.86 m 2 g –1 . Moreover, AC@JHCF-6–10 can directly serve as a binder-free supercapacitor electrode, which exhibits good electrochemical performance: a specific capacitance of 202.8 F g –1 at 1 A g –1 for the AC@JHCF-6–10 electrode (vs 0.2 F g –1 for Virgin CF), while an energy density of 10.13 Wh kg –1 at a power density of 599.80 W kg –1 for the SSC of AC@JHCF-6–10//AC@JHCF-6–10.
