Abstract
Abstract This chapter discusses the authorship, text, transmission, method, sources, and emphases of the commentaries Pelagius wrote on the Pauline letters (Romans to Philemon) between 405/406 and 410 ce. It reviews the scholarship on problems posed by the two principal manuscripts of the commentaries, which diverge in their witness to the text of the Pauline letters and the text of Pelagius’ comments. It describes the techniques Pelagius used to explain the meaning and implications of Paul’s text, elucidating it by means of paraphrase, explanation, argument, and reference to Scripture. Lastly, the chapter illustrates how Pelagius interacts with the biblical text on several key Pauline themes: law and gospel, grace and merits, ‘flesh’ and ‘spirit’, and dying to sin and living in the Spirit.
