Abstract
Abstract This chapter addresses the question of what it can mean to approach a musical work phenomenologically through an analysis of Friedrich Rückert’s poem “Ich atmet’ einen linden Duft” and Gustave Mahler’s musical setting of it. The chapter begins with a synoptic description of Husserl’s path of access to phenomenology not just as the suspension of the habits of ordinary empirical, scientific, and theoretical thinking, but in view of the presiding role of movement and kinesthetic intentionality in perception. Taking Roman Ingarden’s study of the literary work of art as a first methodological model, the chapter offers an analysis of Rückert’s poem following Ingarden’s heuristic of phenomenological layers. A critique of Ingarden precedes a methodological reversal that prepares the phenomenological reading of Mahler’s song as the perceptual flux and point of contact between the reader and two aesthetic utterances, poetic and musical.
