Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores the rise of electoral autocracy. Once synonymous with democracy, multiparty elections are now extremely widespread among nondemocratic regimes. Recent studies offer competing views on this trend: some argue that elections bolster nondemocratic rule, while others suggest they destabilize it. Contrary to what we might expect if elections strengthened autocracy, we find that the rise of electoral institutions in the second half of the twentieth century often resulted from domestic and international pressures on reluctant autocrats. Research shows that while elections have stabilized some autocratic regimes, they have often been destabilizing.
