Abstract
The Australian army’s connections with the other land forces of the British Commonwealth were both longstanding and deep. Just how longstanding and deep became clear when the Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF) moved away from fighting with the British and other Commonwealth armies in 1942 to fighting with the United States (US) forces during 1942–45. Changing army horses midstream was difficult. This article examines the cultural and military-structural ties that allowed the Australian army to cooperate with the military forces of the United Kingdom, the other dominions, and India, but which hampered any such collaboration with the US Army.
