Abstract
Cet article met en lumière le contexte sociopolitique et scientifique qui, de 1945 à 1961, a permis la consolidation institutionnelle de la recherche nordique au Québec francophone. Une attention particulière est accordée aux tractations intellectuelles, disciplinaires et politiques qui ont mené à la création du Centre d’études nordiques de l’Université Laval en 1961. Résolument ancrés dans l’histoire contemporaine du Québec, les débats sous-jacents à la réalisation du projet institutionnel imaginé par le géographe Louis-Edmond Hamelin (1923–2020) mettent au jour des tensions entre différents groupes d’acteurs (politiques, universitaires, etc.) dont les intérêts divergent sur le plan des fins, mais convergent quant aux moyens. Entre impératif scientifique (l’avancement des connaissances) et rhétorique politique (assurer une présence canadienne-française dans le Nord du Québec), la création du centre de recherche cristallise les enjeux politiques et scientifiques du temps et constitue une fenêtre opportune pour l’étude des prémisses de la Révolution tranquille.
