Abstract
Abstract This chapter focuses on the environmental pillar of sustainability by examining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6, 7, 13, 14, and 15, which target access to clean water and sanitation and clean energy, as well as climate action, and the stewardship of life below water and life on land. The chapter discusses SDG 6’s emphasis on ensuring access to clean water and sanitation, outlining international laws and practices supporting water management. SDG 7 addresses the need for affordable, reliable, and modern energy, focusing on the transition to renewable energy sources, and the chapter underlines relevant international legal measures and instruments. SDG 13 underscores urgent climate action to combat climate change and its impacts, and the chapter considers commitments made under the Paris Agreement and other relevant international regimes. SDG 14 aims to conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas, and marine resources, addressing issues such as marine pollution and overfishing, and the chapter outlines the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and other relevant international instruments. Finally, SDG 15 focuses on protecting terrestrial ecosystems, highlighting the importance of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, and the chapter considers multilateral agreements, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and other related measures. The chapter emphasizes the interconnectedness of these goals and the importance of implementing integrated international legal and policy frameworks to achieve sustainable development and protect the biosphere.
