Abstract
During operation, the pressure tubes in CANDU reactors develop zirconium embedded hydride defects via corrosion through the primary heat transport and their contact with the end fittings, which reduces the ductility of the pressure tube and greatly increases the risk of cracking. As such, the extent of their development is a critical inspection requirement. The current method used to determine this is slow, expensive, and spatially non-comprehensive. In this report, a non-destructive and spatially comprehensive method using the novel ultrasound techniques of Full Matrix Capture (FMC) and the Total Focus Method (TFM) is developed for predicting hydride extent. It improves upon prior research that only used conventional ultrasound methods.
