Abstract
Abstract The eighth/fourteenth century grammarian Zayn al-ʿArab al-Miṣrī enjoyed a rich and varied scholarly career, shaped by the intellectual landscape of the late-Ilkhanid period. Although he is best known for his oft-cited commentary on al-Baġawī’s (d. 516/1122) collection of hadith, Maṣābīḥ al-sunna , his scribal and scholarly activities spanned a wider range of disciplines. This is evidenced by his numerous extant holograph and autograph manuscripts. The present paper offers a more nuanced picture of Zayn al-ʿArab’s career and pays special attention to his engagement with Quṭb al-Dīn al-Šīrāzī’s (d. 710/1311) commentary on the Kulliyyāt (Book I ) of Ibn Sīnā’s (d. 428/1037) al-Qānūn fī l-ṭibb .
