Linear oxidation rate of bulk pieces of aluminum in supercritical water

Abstract
Aluminum slugs with a diameter and height of 6.25 mm were exposed to supercritical water up to 450 °C and density ranging between 219–444 kg/m 3 for different lengths of time. The mass of the leftover aluminum pieces was used to determine the linear oxidation rate, the speed at which the dimensions of the aluminum slugs decrease with time. The oxidation rate sharply increases until 400 °C after which the rate of increase slows down. A maximum reaction rate of 1.8 mm/h was achieved at 450 °C where density had minor impact on the oxidation rate. PXRD of the solid by-products demonstrated the presence of α -Al 2 O 3 at supercritical temperatures as low as 380 °C and that the crystallinity of the products increases with both temperature and time spent at supercritical conditions.
