FWKO (Free Water Knock Out) is a device that utilises the principle of gravity settling, resulting from density differences, to separate water, oil and gas from bitumen emulsions.The separation is achieved by injecting hot steam into oil sands, thereby creating a fluidised state.The internal residence time of the bitumen emulsion has a significant impact on the separation efficiency.In this study, numerical simulations were employed to analyse the separation efficiency and residence time of FWKO vessels with different aspect ratios.The design model, based on Stokes theory, involved adjusting the aspect ratio in 5% increments, with a total of six models analysed.The results demonstrated that as the aspect ratio of the FWKO vessel increased, both the residence time and the separation efficiency exhibited an upward trend.This was attributed to the augmentation in both the FWKO length and the area of the water-oil interface.To elucidate the underlying cause of this increase, the flow velocity was measured in the vicinity of the weir, where oil separation occurs.The findings indicated that as the aspect ratio increased, the flow velocity decreased, leading to enhanced gravity settling and, consequently, elevated separation efficiency.However, the rate of increase in separation efficiency exhibited a tendency to decrease, and separation efficiency was converging.This suggests that the enhancement of separation efficiency and residence time through aspect ratio manipulation is limited in the absence of supplementary equipment.Moreover, an excessively large aspect ratio in actual plant operation can lead to inefficiency, emphasising the necessity for research to ascertain the optimal aspect ratio of the FWKO vessel.
