Pentafluoroethane (CF 3 CHF 2 ; HFC-125) is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) widely used as a firefighting agent, and in refrigeration systems and heat pumps, particularly as a 50/50 blend with difluoromethane (CH 2 F 2 ; HFC-32) known as R-410A. HFCs are currently being phased out under the terms of the Montreal Protocol (Kigali Amendment). In order to monitor the concentration profiles of HFC-125 in the atmosphere using infrared-sounding instruments, such as the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment – Fourier transform spectrometer (ACE-FTS), accurate laboratory spectroscopic data are required. This work describes 29 new high-resolution infrared absorption cross sections of pentafluoroethane / dry synthetic air over the spectral range 700 – 1375 cm -1 , derived from spectra recorded using a high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer (Bruker IFS 125HR) and a 26-cm-pathlength cell. Spectra were recorded at resolutions between 0.01 and 0.03 cm -1 (calculated as 0.9/MOPD; MOPD = maximum optical path difference) over a range of temperatures and pressures (189 – 296 K and 7.5 – 760 Torr). The new absorption cross sections in this work improve upon those available in HITRAN 2020 for remote sensing.
