Abstract
Cet article interroge le rôle qu’a joué l’événement dans l’élaboration du concept de trauma, en psychiatrie et en psychanalyse, mais aussi dans le champ des trauma studies. Ce champ d’étude interdisciplinaire naît dans le courant des années 1990 aux États-Unis alors que domine une conception événementielle du trauma, portée par le Manuel diagnostique et statistique des troubles mentaux, ouvrage de référence en psychiatrie. Il s’agit d’examiner la manière dont les théoriciens des trauma studies se positionnent vis-à-vis de ce paradigme, ainsi que le rôle qu’ils accordent à l’événement dans leurs approches culturelles et littéraires du trauma. L’article met donc en relief l’enjeu théorique et politique que la notion d’événement a d’emblée constitué pour les trauma studies.
