‘I am not the only one fighting demons’: qualitative insights on a veteran songwriting organization’s social outcomes

Abstract
Social functioning influences the success or failure of the military to civilian transition. While federal programs designed to guide this transition do not always emphasize social functioning, non-profit and community-based programs serving military service members and veterans (MSMV) often emphasize social outcomes of leisure activities or community-based settings. These settings have been shown to enhance social skills relevant to community reintegration for military veterans. This secondary thematic analysis breaks down the results of a larger qualitative outcomes evaluation to focus on identifying social outcomes of one U.S.-based veteran non-profit organization’s songwriting programs. Five themes, including a tangible outlet, relatedness, self-expression, processing, and sense of service, were produced from the perspectives of veteran participants through the analysis of multiple data sources. These outcomes offer unique insight into the positive impacts that community-based organizations can have on the social aspects of veteran reintegration experiences.
