Abstract

Objective: The objective of this article is to investigate the variables "urban forestry" and "ventilation," aiming to understand how these can contribute to the formalization of an urban sensory perception methodology capable of promoting autonomy and comfort for people with visual impairments when they are pedestrians traveling in the city. Theoretical Framework: This section presents the main concepts and theories that underpin the research. The concepts of spatial perception, aural spatial perception, soundscape, ventilation, and urban forestry stand out, providing a solid foundation for understanding the research context. Method: The methodology adopted for this research involves a qualitative analysis of the variables "urban forestry" and "ventilation" based on participant observation by the author of the article, who has congenital low vision in both eyes, during pedestrian movements in the cities of Berlin (Germany), Vancouver (Canada), Strasbourg (France), and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), without assistance, between the starting and finishing points. The methodology established a progressive scope based on local recognition, which would provide autonomy and comfort due to the developed familiarity. Results and Discussion: The results revealed that, regarding aural perception, both variables have the potential to contribute to spatial understanding for a visually impaired person. In the discussion section, these results are contextualized in light of the theoretical framework, highlighting the implications and relationships identified. Potential discrepancies and limitations of the study are also considered in this section. Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research are discussed, providing insights into how the results can be applied or influence practices in the fields of urban development, sustainability, inclusion, and accessibility. These implications may include a new perspective on the development of urban planning adjustments and lead to the development of a methodology for sensory perception of the city that can be taught, ensuring autonomy for people with visual impairments and contributing to adaptations regarding the need to maintain autonomy as people age. Originality/Value: This qualitative exploratory analysis seeks to contribute to the scope of studies on accessibility and perception of the city, aiming to support inclusive approaches that allow people with total or partial visual impairments to experience the city independently. It also contributes to new ways of thinking about natural and built spaces and the interactions generated by the dynamics proposed in and with these spaces.
