Contestation of power and identity in Kenya’s 2022 governor election in Machakos county
Bibliographic record
Abstract
The introduction of sub-national governments in Kenya, along with an increased number of elective seats, has expanded interest in electoral politics beyond the presidential vote. Building on the broader debates on the emerging literature on the electoral politics of devolved units in Kenya, this paper uses secondary data to examine political contestation for the powerful governor position in the 2022 elections in Machakos County. The dynamics of elite competition between co-ethnics are explored by examining how the candidates presented themselves and their opponents to the electorate. The extent to which the presidential campaigns intersected with the county governor campaigns is also examined. The study finds that intra-ethnic competition for the governor's office is shaped by class privilege, a combination of self-identification and social differentiation strategies, as well as presidential election dynamics. These results have implications for how politicians perceive what makes a good leader and how leaders are chosen to vie.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
