Abstract
Abstract Clubroot disease, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae , poses a significant threat to global canola production, particularly in Canada, where it leads to substantial economic losses. This soil-borne pathogen disrupts nutrient and water uptake by inducing gall formation on roots, resulting in stunted growth and reduced yields. Management is complicated by the pathogen’s long-term persistence in soil and the emergence of virulent pathotypes that overcome genetic resistance. This case study explores the biology and epidemiology of P. brassicae , its impact on canola cultivation, and integrated management strategies – including resistant cultivars, crop rotation, and soil amendments. It also highlights recent research advancements, such as resistance gene mapping and identification, which enhance our understanding of host-pathogen interactions. Through this case study, students and researchers will gain insights into plant pathology, modern breeding techniques, and the importance of sustainable crop management in combating evolving pathogens.
