We designed and manufactured a benchtop scatterometer for measuring the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of the heat rejection mirrors (HRMs) for the Compact CORonograph 3 (CCOR-3) that is planned to be on board the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Vigil spacecraft. CCOR-3 is the third in a series of white-light solar coronagraphs that uses an external occulter to image the faint corona around the Sun to detect Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). The CCOR-3 instrument is very sensitive to straylight bouncing off the HRMs and illuminating the back of the external occulter in the center of the instrument’s field of view. This simple, compact scatterometer is constructed with mostly off-the-shelf components and allows for rapid and efficient analysis of the straylight performance of the HRMs.
