Abstract
Contemplative conservatism? A transatlantic exploration This essay explores possible connections between two often-overlooked strands of political thought, the Dutch tradition of Christian Democracy associated with the formation of the CDA party in the 1970s and the contemplative conservatism of Canadian political philosopher George Parkin Grant. It is argued that in spite of numerous differences due to national culture, these two political perspectives can speak to each other as varieties of Christian conservatism. In combination, they can serve as an interpretive framework for evaluating U.S. American conservative thought, rejecting its nationalist or authoritarian excesses while also acknowledging important insights.
