MiR-423-5p Regulates Microvascular Homeostasis and Renal Function After Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

Abstract
Purpose: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a significant contributor to kidney damage in renal transplant recipients and a common cause of acute kidney injury (AKI). Increasing evidence highlights that the severity of microvascular rarefaction after AKI is a critical determinant of long-term kidney dysfunction. Recently, we demonstrated that endothelial cells (EC) secrete various extracellular vesicles enriched with miR-423-5p. Our findings indicate that miR-423-5p serves as a predictor of renal microvascular rarefaction and fibrosis, as observed in both a murine model of renal IRI and in a cohort of renal transplant patients who experienced delayed graft function.
