I Would Like to Phone a PhrienD: Using a Hint Bartering System When Students Get Stuck
Bibliographic record
Abstract
The Phone a PhrienD system provides students with a pre-determined hint to help them begin a test question when they “draw a blank.” This initiative supports students who may be experiencing test anxiety or forgetfulness due to the stressful nature of the test environment. If a student uses a hint, their grade is subjected to an 80% cap on the given question. There is no limit to how many hints a student can take, but there is only one hint created for each question. In this project, surveys indicated that students were happy that the hint opportunity was available during the test and most students expected they would use at least one hint on a test. In-test observations of hint use frequency demonstrated that 63% of students used at least one hint and on average, there was one hint distributed for every student in the class.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
