Navigating the First Year: Peer Mentorship as a Tool for Success in Engineering Education
Bibliographic record
Abstract
The transition from high school to university presents significant academic, social, and personal challenges, particularly in demanding fields like engineering. To support first-year students, the Engineering Department introduced a peer mentoring program, where upper-year students (mentors) provide guidance, resources, and support to first-year students (mentees), helping them adapt more smoothly to university life. This study evaluates the benefits of the program for both mentors and mentees, with the goal of refining and enhancing it based on feedback. The findings highlight the positive impact of the program, as mentees develop a strong sense of belonging and a safe space to share academic and personal challenges. Additionally, mentors gain valuable leadership experience through their role. Overall, participants report high satisfaction with the program’s organization and effectiveness, reinforcing its importance in promoting student success in engineering education.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
