Abstract The preponderant presence of sensitive sea clay deposits in the regions where Québec’s population is concentrated make landslides in such soils one of the key natural hazards to be managed. In the mid-2000s, the Québec government adopted the Disaster Governance Framework to update its natural risk management policies from the standpoint of public security. Based on work carried out in the 1970s and 1980s, a new, more elaborate approach was then developed. To this end, new government policy directions were established, and an array of complementary actions was gradually introduced in the 2000s, in particular a more sustained partnership between the government and the municipalities. This article seeks to take stock of Québec’s approach to landslide risk management and outline future challenges, in particular concerning potential climate change impacts.
