Abstract
Abstract This chapter interprets the form of Sebald’s Austerlitz as affording a different readerly experience to the new ethics of self-binding. It proposes a model of ethical and political judgment that is solicited by the complex digressive and associative aspects of Sebald’s prose form. It turns to Hannah Arendt’s reading of Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Judgement (1790) as a way of helping to explain how the ethics and politics of judgment operate on a granular level in a novel defined by digressive, associative, and citational techniques. This chapter maintains that this approach reveals an intricate and overdetermined contrast between monumental and diminutive forms of architecture in Austerlitz. It thus offers a new way to understand some of the more celebrated and recognizable themes of Sebald’s novel, such as exile, woundedness, and melancholy.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; both teacher heads agree on what is shown here.
