Abstract
Abstract This chapter argues that Lisa Robertson’s The Baudelaire Fractal offers an alternative way to understand hospitality—that is, as a model for an ethics of relational reading. While The Baudelaire Fractal seems, at first glance, akin to Rose’s parallel novel Albertine, this chapter illustrates the ways in which it takes the attunement to producing similarities to its extreme by founding a novel not on an act of characterological counterfocalization, but rather on a mimetic affinity so pronounced it turns into a compulsion to become the other. This is powerfully encapsulated in the “impersonal intimacy” that the narrator Hazel Brown has with the authorship of Charles Baudelaire. By “becoming” Baudelaire through an act of self-scattering and self-estrangement, Hazel becomes a constellated consciousness.
