Abstract
Abstract This introduction outlines the scope of associative and essayistic prose fiction and argues for the suitability of the term “constellational novel.” It considers why the “constellation” in particular is useful for describing associative and essayistic formal effects, and outlines a methodology of “reading for constellations,” which it situates within larger methodological discussions in literary studies. This introduction also demonstrates how the constellational novel challenges many assumptions made about novel form, especially those that have recently coalesced in discussions of autofiction and the ethical turn. Drawing on the work of Dorothy J. Hale in particular, it provides a substantial survey and potted history of the past scholarship on ethics and the novel.
