Abstract
Abstract This chapter focuses on figures of “bondage” [enchaînement]—that is, “linkage” and “chaining”—in Proust. Its contention is that we can glean something important about the ethical phenomenology of “reading as self-binding” by placing it in a context that purposefully literalizes its metaphors of restriction and captivity. It considers how Jacqueline Rose’s Albertine transforms a feminist experience of readerly counter-focalization into a writerly act that is imprisoned in the diegetic world of Proust’s novel, especially in its constellation of images and associations. Then this chapter turn to how the experiences of Emmanuel Levinas and Józef Czapski trouble the model of readerly self-binding by revealing a complex interplay of bondage, ethics, and form.
