Abstract
This article examines a neglected area of social work scholarship: the theological assumptions of contemporary progressive Christian social concern. Written as a theological reflection, it considers biblical proof texts, the prophetic tradition, and notions of an open and relational God, concluding that prayer and social action are deeply interrelated. A complex web of theology underlies progressive motivations to undertake social justice initiatives in such areas of social concern as poverty reduction or homelessness. Ignoring these theological facets misses the point of applied progressive Christian social concern. Progressive Christianity can be performative, superficial, and supporting and reinforcing prevailing power structures, and here reside its most significant shortcomings.
