Abstract

The research presents a two-step design process for a spoke-type Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) tailored for high-torque, low-speed applications. In the first step, the dimensions of the magnet and its position is decided by carrying out parametric analysis in a finite element software. Then, flux barriers are designed in the rotor to improve the overall performance. The designed motor's performance is compared with an identical sized 3.5 kW surface mounted PMSM, which is used in high-torque, low-speed elevator application. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) reveals that the proposed design improves the average torque output by about 48 %, reduces the torque ripple by 10 % and reduces cogging torque ripple by 4.8 %.
