Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

ABSTRACT: Mathematical modeling can provide an important window on the field application of hydraulic fractures to energy extraction and storage. In this presentation, I will outline some of the hydraulic fracture modeling projects with which I have been involved, including: (i) efficient ways to model planar hydraulic fractures in multilayer elastic media; (ii) the development of the Implicit Level Set Algorithm (ILSA) that can incorporate multiscale tip asymptotics and locate the fracture free boundary on a coarse mesh; (iii) the combination of the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) with a hydraulic fracture model to invert tilt meter measurements; and (iv) the modeling and asymptotics of leak-off driven recession of the closure front, culminating in the Sunset Solution. I will demonstrate how these latter two projects, which build on a long history of hydraulic fracture modeling, have the potential for real-time monitoring and measurement in field applications.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
