Abstract
Le Popol Wuj est un texte majeur des littératures autochtones des Amériques : il compte parmi les quelques œuvres littéraires ayant survécu à l’invasion espagnole du Guatemala. Le récit cosmogonique qu’il contient, en même temps que la longue histoire de ses interprétations, allant de l’espagnol au français en passant par l’anglais et revenant graduellement au k’iche’, expliquent en partie les multiples traductions qui en ont été faites : c’est là que réside un enjeu majeur, puisque son récit cosmogonique est souvent, à défaut d’un meilleur mot, apparenté à une création ex nihilo . Or le texte k’iche’, par sa richesse et sa densité, laisse entrevoir un autre horizon de sens, dont l’article cherchera sommairement, en citant de multiples traductions et commentaires, à dégager, afin de préparer un éventuel chantier de traduction, en français. Les termes qui touchent la « création » et la « formation » de la Terre y sont particulièrement ciblés, emblématiques qu’ils sont du défi littéraire et langagier représenté par la traduction du Popol Wuj .
