An early problem in the modelling of work-hardening with dislocation mechanics was the formulation of a constitutive relation using the mesoscopic parameters to result in a linear Stage II slope, θ II , for face-centered cubic single crystals. Although the functional relationship was easily derived, the prediction of its magnitude has not been done. This study uses a constitutive relation that replicates the stress-strain diagram for polycrystalline metal to obtain θ II = μ/157.8, where μ is the elastic shear modulus. The analysis shows that the obstacle strength factor α/μ is independent of both temperature and the stacking fault energy in Al, Cu and Ni-Co alloys.
