Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care was launched in 1998. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The fields of clinical nutrition and metabolic care are divided into 15 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Jann ArendsJann ArendsDr Jann Arends is board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hematology & Medical Oncology with board certification in Palliative Medicine and Clinical Nutrition. As a visiting fellow at the Metabolism Division at Washington University Medical School, St. Louis, Mo, USA, he gained expertise in stable isotope methodologies enabling in-vivo tracer studies investigating synthetic rates of whole-body protein and individual circulating proteins. After medical training in Göttingen, Dr Arends moved to Freiburg, Germany, heading the Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition section at the Tumor Biology Center at Freiburg University from 1993–2015. From 2015–2024 he headed the palliative care section in medical oncology at Freiburg Medical Center. After retiring, he continues as consultant in Gastroenterology at Freiburg University Institute for Oncological Rehabilitation. His clinical research activities have focused on diagnosing and treating malnutrition and cachexia in patients with cancer. Dr Arends chairs the clinical nutrition section of the German Society of Hematology and Oncology and the Homecare section of the German society of Clinical Nutrition. For several years, he has been involved in training courses on nutrition in cancer patients offered by professional societies, including ESPEN, ESMO and ASCO. Since 2003 and 2006, he is the leading author of the German (DGEM) and European (ESPEN) expert groups developing guidelines for nutritional support of patients with cancer. His CV includes more than 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Kianoush B. KashaniKianoush B. KashaniDr Kashani is trained in the fields of Nephrology and Critical Care Medicine. He is currently ranked as a Professor of Medicine and Assistant Professor of Medical Education. He serves as a consultant in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension and the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. He is currently the chair of the Nephrology-ICU Committee and Digital Health Committee under the division of Nephrology and Hypertension. His research interest is focused on acute kidney injury, kidney injury biomarkers, acid-base and electrolytes, kidney replacement therapies, extracorporeal blood purification strategies, ECMO, fluid management, simulation medicine, point-of-care ultrasonography, artificial intelligence, digital health, and education. In addition, he provides lectures regarding AKI, education, and fluid management globally. He has published 422 peer-reviewed papers and written several book chapters. André Van GossumAndré Van GossumProf. André Van Gossum was appointed as Medical Physician in 1978 and as Gastroenterologist in 1983. In 1985 Prof. Van Gossum completed a one-year fellowship in Canada under the supervision of Prof. Khursheed Jeejeebhoy in Toronto General Hospital. In 1991, he presented a thesis entitled Evaluation of lipid peroxidation by measurement of breath pentane in humans. Prof. Van Gossum has been serving as the Chief of the Clinic of Intestinal Diseases and Nutritional Support in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatopancreatology and Digestive Oncology at Erasme University Hospital and at the Bordet Institute (Hopital Universitaire de Bruxelles-Free University of Brussels), in Belgium. He has been lecturer of post graduate courses in Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition in the Faculty of Medicine. Additionally, he launched a program on home enteral and parenteral nutrition and was the Coordinator of the Nutrition Support Team at Erasme Hospital. In 1988, Prof. Van Gossum founded the Belgian Society for Clinical Nutrition and has been an active member of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) since 2005. He was appointed as the President of the ESPEN congress, held in Brussels, Belgium, in 2005, served as the Treasurer of ESPEN from 2008 to 2012 and was elected as the Chair since 2014 to 2018. He was appointed as an ESPEN Honorary member in 2019. Prof. Van Gossum is also an ongoing member of the ESPEN-HAN and CIF group and the GLIM international working group. He is currently a Consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology/Nutrition at the Hopital Universitaire de Bruxelles. He is the coordinator of the Belgian Alliance for optimal Nutrition Care for all (ONCA). His CV includes 315 publications in peer-review journals. Kelly A. TappendenKelly A. TappendenDr Kelly A. Tappenden, Ph.D., R.D., FASPEN, is an internationally recognised leader in clinical nutrition and gastrointestinal physiology, currently serving as Dean and Professor in the College of Health at the University of Utah, USA. Her academic journey began with a Ph.D. in Nutrition and Metabolism from the University of Alberta, Canada, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, USA. Over the course of her career, Dr Tappenden has held numerous influential academic and administrative roles, including Department Head of Kinesiology and Nutrition and Interim Head of Occupational Therapy at the University of Illinois Chicago, USA, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition for over a decade. Dr Tappenden's research has significantly advanced understanding of intestinal adaptation, short bowel syndrome, and the role of prebiotics and probiotics in gut health. She has secured over $5 million in research funding as a principal or co-investigator and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, and edited seminal texts in gastrointestinal nutrition. Her mentorship has shaped the careers of many emerging scholars, with her mentees earning prestigious awards. Dr Tappenden's contributions have been recognised with top honours from the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Society for Nutrition, among others. In addition to her scholarly achievements, Dr Tappenden has held leadership roles in major professional societies, including serving as President of ASPEN and on the Board of Directors for the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. She is a sought-after speaker, having delivered hundreds of invited lectures globally, and continues to influence the field through her editorial work, scientific consulting, and service on national and international advisory boards.
