Abstract
Grâce à des collectionneurs comme François Hébert, on connaît désormais l’inventaire des fascicules publiés au Québec des années 1940 aux années 1960. Sur les 11 000 romans en fascicules qui paraissent alors, environ la moitié d’entre eux portent le nom des Éditions Police-Journal. Or, peu de gens savent que les héros Albert Brien, Domino noir et Pit Verchères, qui auront leurs propres séries chez Police-Journal, sont d’abord nés dans les pages de certains périodiques québécois au tout début des années 1940, dont, plus particulièrement, l’hebdomadaire Police Journal. En retraçant la naissance et l’évolution d’Albert Brien dans la presse de l’époque, cet article se propose de montrer comment le succès spectaculaire du format fascicule est d’abord préparé par la matrice médiatique centrée sur l’imaginaire policier.
