Abstract
Chapter 2 introduces a model of a hypothetical Indigenous community premised on two assumptions that distinguish many Indigenous communities, as revealed by evidence in the literature. Culture is explicitly included in the theory and it is modelled as a public good that everyone benefits from and everyone can contribute to. It is shown that, when a community places a great deal of importance on culture—as the literature suggests is the case—a transition from commonly owned property to privately owned property actually decreases the wellbeing of community members, a finding that flies in the face of the common presumption in economics.
