Community Variables Predicting Positive Adaptation in Sexually Abused Children in the Province of Quebec

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore school and community factors that may influence the positive adaptation of sexually abused children. Our sample consisted of 130 children, (mean age = 9.05 years old), victims of sexual abuse, their non-offending parent and their teacher. Results suggests that self-control in school was associated with the absence of clinical levels of externalizing behavior problems. Community support and having greater material resources in the neighborhood were associated with the absence of clinical levels of internalizing behavior problems. Results underscore the importance of developing resources in communities to support the psychosocial development of children.
