An Integrated Approach for Locating Buried Bedrock Valleys for Tunnelling Projects
Bibliographic record
Abstract
The presence of channels, incised into the bedrock, filled with saturated deposits of granular soils is common in Southern Ontario. These channels, which are commonly referred to as “buried valleys,” pose very challenging conditions for mechanized rock tunnelling operations if appropriate mitigations are not employed. Geophysical methods have proven to be particularly useful for delineating buried valleys and allowing for improved planning through the identification and evaluation of potential risks associated with these features. The integration of geophysical surveys into a geotechnical investigation program is viewed as a cost-effective approach to reduce the risk of encountering potentially problematic site conditions and optimizing the borehole placement. This paper discusses typical geophysical methods that have been successfully used in mapping bedrock topography and competence and presents a framework with case studies that focus on identifying, characterizing, and managing the risks associated with buried valleys on linear infrastructure projects involving mechanized rock tunnelling.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.

machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
