Abstract
Dear Colleague, The month of April, at the Medanta Heart Institute is extremely busy as we hold our annual “Medanta Echo n Cardiology: Today and Tomorrow” conference, held this year for the 14th time. This time around we had nearly 600 delegates, from all over India. That said, the first original article “Predictive value of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio in patients with acute myocardial infarction in coronary angiographic profile and left ventricular ejection fraction in North-Indian population” is from Sawai Man Singh Medical College, Jaipur. This study based on 102 acute myocardial infarction patients discusses the value of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio in peripheral blood as a marker of systemic inflammation. The second original article is from Canada, titled “Implementation of a specialized heart function inpatient unit to improve patient care, trainee education, and healthcare system efficiencies” from the renowned McMaster University. This study is based on a unique premise that for patients with heart failure a specialized heart function inpatient unit be created to improve patient care, decrease the length of the stay of such patients, and decrease the re-admission rates. It is a well thought out service plan which a lot of busy hospitals with heart failure patients would like to adapt. Worth reading and thinking. The third article in this issue is a review article titled “Dermatological manifestations associated with atherosclerosis-revisited” and authored by Dr. Pradeep Kumar and colleagues. This article again reiterates the fact that a good examination will reveal a lot of clues about the patient. We have to just look for them. This a good article for preventive cardiologists. A case report on “Multiple plaque ruptures with thrombotic occlusion” from the Command Hospital, Panchkula, Haryana, and authored by Dr. Vivek Singh and colleagues is also an interesting read with good optical coherence tomography images of the coronary arteries. The fifth contribution is from Oman, written and submitted by Dr. Mansoor C. A and titled “Fatal Streptococcus agalactiae complicated by basal ganglia hemorrhage and multiple cerebral infarcts: a case report” highlights the value of multidisciplinary team approach in sick patients. The last submission is also a case report in which diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state gave rise to both acute myocardial infarction and acute ischemic stroke in the same patient. The authors are Dr Harsha and colleagues and the case report is from New Delhi. So, dear reader, this issue too, brings forth a lot of scientific material from the realm of cardiovascular sciences.
