Abstract

Driver drowsiness causes many fatalities, but computer vision offers a cost-effective, non-invasive solution for early warnings. This paper compares approaches using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), face meshes, and vision transformers (ViTs). ViTs achieved the highest yawn classification accuracy, with 98 % on Kaggle and custom datasets. Face mesh preprocessing reduced model size without significantly impacting the accuracy, where a 6 -layer CNN with face mesh pre-processing (0.35 million parameters) performed similarly to a ViT model (85.8 million parameters). Finally, we demonstrate these models in a human-machine interface that allows users to adjust the sensitivity of the alert. The results highlight the potential of computer vision to reduce fatalities by early detection of driver drowsiness.
