Abstract
Abstract Chapter 2 departs from conventional readings of Twelfth Night’s allusions to Erasmian–Pauline paradoxes of divinely wise folly as code for the play’s Christian orthodoxy. Instead, I explore the relationship between Pauline end-times and the Twelfth Night in terms of three temporal ruptures and subjective suspensions that trigger Viola’s and Sebastian’s improvisation of new idenities: shipwreck and precarious survival; rhetorical and queer ‘accommodation’; and the re-radicalizing of Paul’s original declarations of messianic freedom, which carnival’s holiday rituals mimic vestigially. The chapter argues that, despite the play’s formal reunions and marriages enacting a generic reversion to patriarchal and gender norms, Twelfth Night’s semi-resolved entanglements, and the indeterminate polyvocality of Feste in particular, sustain a resolutely weak but “impotential” selfhood opened up by shipwreck’s eschatological time–space.
