Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores how Pauline tropes of messianic freedom inform Shakespeare’s dramatic reinvention of Richard of Gloucester in Henry VI Part Three and Richard III. Thomas More’s The History of King Richard III alerted Shakespeare to Richard’s connections with Paul through their shared physical impairments, beguiling rhetoric, and masking or flaunting of their ‘deformities’. I investigate Richard’s and Paul’s parallel efforts to revalue themselves through the sociological lens of de/conversion. It aspires to individual emancipation through intersubjective life-writing in three respects: away from conforming normativity; towards the authenticity of divergent bodies; and in solidarity with socially othered persons. Richard’s self-authoring disaffiliations recover a pre-chronicle life story and counter-memory to official Tudor history (analogous to pre-canonical ‘Saint’ Paul). Yet Richard’s murder of the princes in the Tower crosses a line into anti-social tragic determinacy. But a final Pauline oath on the eve of Bosworth pulls Richard back into re-energized self-assertion of his life history against the moralism of de casibus tragedy and the Tudor providentialism of Richmond’s victory.
