Abstract
Abstract Chapter 1 introduces the book’s overall purpose, arguments, contextual choices, and significance. It discusses the challenges faced by the British Empire in institutionalising peasant proprietorship in the nineteenth century and explains the problem of secure property rights in the colonies within the context of the institutionalised laws and practices about land tenure in England. It outlines the main arguments developed in the book on the Empire’s efforts towards peasant proprietorship in the three colonies of Punjab, Ireland, and Prince Edward Island. The chapter concludes by placing the book’s contributions to multiple strands of scholarship related to comparative legal history, legal transplants, and the governance ideologies of the British Empire.
