Abstract
Abstract France ceded Prince Edward Island to the British in 1763, and soon after, the island was divided into sixty-six lots, and sixty-four of these (each of 20,000 acres) were allotted to well-connected individuals, most of whom remained absentee landowners. The inability of the allottees to satisfy the grant conditions, the concentration of landholdings, and a preponderance of leasehold tenures through which land was developed initiated the land question in the colony which dominated its politics over the next century. Chapter 7 outlines various attempts to resolve the land question until the 1860s by the colonial legislature, which included the escheat movement, voluntary purchase from landowners, and establishing tenant rights, and the reasons for the persistent failure of fully converting leasehold to freehold tenures because of the opposition from England.
